I mean, if the people here are living then they have to be eating something, living somewhere, doing jobs and activities other than Pokemon training. My theory is that in this town Pokemon serve as the natural lifestyle for people. Water and Ice types give water. Fire types provide heat. Electric types power houses. The bigger and stronger pokemon serve as transportation with HM's. Food? There are berries everywhere of various flavours, and of all pokemon, there are a select few that are safe to eat. It's not conventional, but the fact that this town is only running thanks to Pokemon is the exact reason why people are offended when someone undermines their lifestyle. It's like Josuke Higashikata from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Diamond Unbreakable. He changed his hair to be like the guy that saved his lifewhen he was a child, and when people insulted it, he wasn't just mad. He was PISSED.
